Rideau Canal Index

I photographed this view of the Ottawa
Lock Station from the Alexandra Bridge

This page serves to organize all the posts in this blog that are related to the Rideau Canal.

Right now I am visiting and photographing the lock stations on the canal, as well as associated features of the canal that are not part of a lock station. These are mainly moveable bridges. There are, as well, memorials to lock workers, sites related to Colonel By, and plaques about the canal and aspects of the canal.

I will likely begin publishing posts on the lock stations and related features in 2020. I will be using this page to preview what I have photographed and to link to all the posts on this blog site related to the Rideau Canal. This page will evolve and change as I progress with this.

The Lock Stations
I will be adding links to the posts for these stations as I publish them. These are listed in order from Ottawa to Kingston Mills. The Beveridges lock stations are part of the Tay Canal system but the locks there were built to the same specifications as the Rideau Canal locks and the Tay Canal is administered by Parks Canada as well, so it will be included.

Common Sign

The sign shown below and its text, shown with it, is common to most of the lockstations.

Proudly bringing you Canada at its best!

Parks Canada welcomes visitors from around the globe to one of the world's largest and most diverse park systems, featuring some of Canada's most important natural and cultural treasures. In this family of special places, there are national parks, national marine conservation areas, national historic sites and historic canals. At this time, twelve world heritage sites are designated in Canada, of which eight include in whole or in part, Parks Canada managed properties.

Canada's national historic canals vary from single locks to complex systems of interconnected locks, channels and natural waterways. The canals trace the routes of exploration, defence, commerce and transportation which helped shape Canada. Today they are extensive cultural and natural heritage corridors that preserve natural beauty and rich heritage and connect Canadians with their history.

Nine historic canals are maintained and operated by Parks Canada. Cape Breton Island's salt-water heart, Bras d'Or Lake, is reached through Nova Scotia's St. Peters Canal. Five canals in Québec bypass the shallows and rapids of historic lifelines of early Canada; the St. Lawrence, Ottawa and Richelieu rivers. Ontario's Trent-Severn Waterway and Rideau Canal weave passages through the province's interior lakes and rivers, and the Sault Ste. Marie Canal completed an all-Canadian Great Lakes navigation system.

When you visit Parks Canada national parks and national historic sites, you can be confident you will bring home many wonderful memories of exciting and enriching experiences.

CANADA'S NATIONAL PARKS AND NATIONAL HISTORIC SITES

3 Canals on the Ottawa River in Québec

The Rideau Canal's construction would allow boat traffic from the St. Lawrence River and Montreal to travel to Ottawa and then travel on the Rideau Canal to Kingston. However, at the time of the Rideau Canal's construction, the Ottawa River between Montreal and Ottawa was not navigable. Three Canals built on the Québec shore made the Ottawa River Navigable and fulfilled the Rideau Canal's purpose.

Those canals are on my agenda to photograph, which I will do when I have finished photographing all the Rideau Canal's lockstations. They are located at Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Carillon and Grenville in Québec. Although I have photographed the Grenville Canal, I did so as an addendum to the plaque located at the stie. When I go back I will pay more attention to the canal itself.
