Memorials in Ottawa

Lest we forget.

Indigenous People Commemorations Index

I would like this list to be longer. There are commemorations to indigenous people in Ottawa and the surrounding area. There are also commemorations that include indigenous people that aren't specifically about them. The Valiants Memorial includes Joseph Brant. The Royal Canadian Legion's Afghanistan memorial is an inuksuk. The War of 1812 Monument includes an indigenous individual.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders field.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae

Au Champ d'Honneur

Au champ d'honneur, les coquelicots
Sont parsemés de lot en lot
Auprès des croix; et dans l'espace
Les allouettes devenues lasses
Melent leurs chants au sifflement
Des obusiers.

Nous sommes morts
Nous qui songions la veille encor'
À nos parents; à nos amis,
C'est nous qui reposons ici
Au champ d'honneur.

À vous jeunes désabusés
À vous de porter l'oriflamme
Et de garder au fond de l'âme
Le goût de vivre en liberté.
Acceptez le défi, sinon
Les coquelicots de faneront
au champ d'honneur.

~Jean Parizeau
Une adaption du poème
In Flanders Fields de John McCrae

For the Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Robert Laurence Binyon

Pour les soldats tombés

Avec action de grâces fière
Une mère pour ses enfants,
L'Angleterre
Pleure pour ses morts
À travers la mer.

La chair de sa chair
Ils étaient l'esprit de l'esprit,
Morts
Pour la cause de liberté.

Solennel
Le frisson de tambours
La Mort
Vénérable et royale
Chante sa peine
Vers les sphères immortelles.

Il y a la musique
Au milieu de la désolation
Et une gloire
Qui rayonne sur nos larmes.

Ils sont partis en chantant
À la bataille
Ils étaient jeunes
En pleine forme, vif d'œil
Stables et rayonnants.

Ils étaient loyaux
Jusqu'à la fin
Contre toute attente
Ils sont tombés
Leurs visages
Tournés vers l'adversaire.

Ils ne vieilliront pas
Comme nous
Qui leur avons survécu;
Ils ne connaîtront jamais
L'outrage
Ni le poids des années.
Quand viendra l'heur
e du crépuscule
Et celle de l'aurore,
Nous nous souviendrons d'eux.

Ils ne seront plus
Avec les camarades heureux;
Ils ne seront plus assis
Aux tables familières chez-eux;
Ils n'ont aucun lot
Dans notre travail journalier;
Ils dorment
Au-delà de l'écume d'Angleterre.

Mais où sont nos désirs
Et nos espoirs profonds,
Senti comme une source
Qui se cache de vue,
Au cœur le plus secret
de leur propre pays
Ils sont connus
Comme on connaît
Les étoiles de la Nuit sont connues;
Comme les étoiles
Qui brilleront
Lorsque nous serons poussière

Défilant sur la plaine céleste,
Comme les étoiles
Qui brillent au moment
de notre obscurité
À la fin
À la fin
Ils demeurent.
