Baldwin – La Fontaine Memorial

This impressive memorial can be found on the grounds of Parliament Hill.

CO-PREMIERS
OF THE PROVINCE OF CANADA

Sir Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine (1807 – 1864) and
Robert Baldwin (1804 – 1858) led a reformist
movement to establish responsible government
in the Province of Canada during the colonial era.
Henceforth, the Cabinet needed a majority of the
elected assembly to pass bills into law, and the
governor followed the advice of his minsters on all
internal matters. Through the work of this remarkable
political partnership, colonists gained control over
domestic affairs — an important step toward Confederation.
