Kìwekì Point

Kìwekì Point is the promontory north of where the Alexandra Bridge begins to cross the Ottawa River from Ottawa to Gatineau.

Kìwekì is the Algonquin word meaning, "to return to one's homeland."

This name was chosen by consensus by Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg and Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation It honours this site, the river and the territory, which continue to support the integrity of the Algonquin Anishinabeg culture and values of its livelihood.

I am the Kichi Zìbì. I have flowed through this region for millennia, the snaking remnant of an ancient sea from the last ice age. I have cut through this valley, moulded the cliffs, acted as a highway, and served as a life-sustaining force for all my relations. Over the years I have witnessed profound change. I have seen the comings and goings of many peoples and cultures. Habitats have shifted and resources have dwindled. But through all of these changes, I have endured. I continue to provide the beings of this land with life-giving sustenance. As you travel down this path, you'll learn from my many relations who have their own stories about this majestic place.

Kwey, I am the Beaver. My fur is shiny and thick. I have a flat tail that I use for many things, like slapping the water when danger is near. I live in the Kichi Zìbì and streams, building lodges made of sticks, mud and trees. The entrance to my lodge is hidden from predators and I must dive under water to enter. The Algonquin Anishinabeg traditionally use my fur for clothing such as mitts and hats to keep warm. For many years they ate my meat, taking only what they needed, and my kin thrived. They believe that my industrious nature teaches us all the wisdom of persistence and determination.

Kwey, I am the Walleye. I live in the Kichi Zìbì and surrounding lakes. I worry about the future because I need to swim up the rapids to spawn. I travel to the same spot every year, but new dams make this harder. My spawned eggs lie between the spaces of rocks. For my babies to hatch, the temperature needs to be 6 to 10 degrees Celsius. It takes 12 to 30 days for them to hatch, but only if the temperature is right. I feed at night and in the early morning, but my other relations find me quite tasty and I have fed many people. I am one of the Algonquin Anishinabeg's traditional foods.

Kwey, I am the Otter. I live both in water and on land. I am clever and mischievous, but I always make time to have fun. I even make my own water slide. Often you'll find me playfully frolicking with my kin. My body is long and slim with short legs and a round muscular tail. My nails are sharp and my feet are webbed. I am a strong swimmer above and below the water. My fur is sometimes used in the braids of Algonquin Anishinabeg regalia. They believe that my fun nature reminds us to always balance work and play.

Kwey, I am the Wisakedjak, also known as the Gray Jay. I live in the coniferous forest around the Kichi Zìbì. I am a trickster. I eat food out of your hand and then steal the food you saved for yourself. I take it and hide it do I can eat in the winter. I fear the Great Grey Owls and Hawks. The Algonquin Anishinabeg consider me a good omen, but sometimes I also warn them of danger. I remind us that it is in our bravery, resilience and commitments to one another that we find growth.

Kwey, I am the Thunder Bird. I am an important spiritual being in Algonquin Anishinabeg stories, tales and legends. The Algonquin Anishinabeg believe that I control the upper world. I flap my wings and create thunder and lightning casting bolts at the underworld creatures. But my power shouldn't be feared. I provide guidance and vision to the Algonquin Anishinabeg and their children.

Kwey, I am the Bear. I walk on four legs but can stand tall on two feet. My powerful teeth and jaws allow me to eat meat. You'll see me fishing and hunting for grubs and ants in the forest and along the Kichi Zìbì. I love honey and I eat other animals too. I also consume plenty of vegetables and berries, which help fill me up as I sleep through the entire winter. I'm very strong, so you can tell where I have been by looking for overturned stumps, trees and rocks. Many Algonquin Anishinabeg are from my bear clan. They are my family.

Kwey, I am the Moose. I live in the vast territory of the Algonquin Anishinabeg along the Kichi Zìbì and occasionally, you can find me wandering the city of Ottawa and townships. As more people populate my homeland I long for my natural habitat, the forest and clean water. The Algonquin Anishinabeg say I am majestic, weighing up to 1.300 pounds (800 kg). But even I have predadors, like the wolf and the bear. When I am threatened I attack and fiercely protect my babies. In the fall, the Algonquin Anishinabeg hunters will hunt me to feed their families. It is in the value of their traditions to respect me as their relation. They only harvest what they need to survive, as they always think forward to the next seven generations.
