Tri-Service Monument

In the east side of Beechwood Cemetery as part of the National Military Cemetery of the Canadian Forces stands a triangular monument commemorating Canada's Tri-Service: Army, Navy and Air Force.

Du côté est du cimetière Beechwood, qui fait partie du cimetière militaire national des Forces canadiennes, se dresse un monument triangulaire commémorant les trois services du Canada : l'Armée de terre, la Marine et l'Aviation.

THE NAVAL HYMN

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who biddest the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
O, hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea.

O Christ, whose voice the waters heard,
And hushed their raging at They word,
Who walkedst on the foaming deep;
And calm amid the storm didst sleep;
O hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea.

William Whiting, 1860

HYMNE NAVAL

WHEN I THINK OF FAMOUS MEN

Near the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields
See how these names are fêted by the waving grass
And by the streamers of white cloud
And whispers in the listening sky.
The names of those who in their lives fought for life
Who wore in their hears the fire's centre.
Born of the sun they travelled a short while towards the sun,
And left the vivid air signed with their honour.

Stephen Spender, 1958

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow.
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

LCol John McCae, 1915

AU CHAMP D'HONNEUR

Au champ d'honneur les coquelicots
Sont parsemés de lot en lot
Auprès des croix; et dans l'espace
Les alouettes devenues lasses
Mêlent leurs chants au sifflement
Des obusiers.

Nous sommes morts,
Nous qui songions la veille encore
À nos parents, à nos amis,
C'est nous qui reposons ici,
Au champ d'honneur.

À vous, jeunes désabusés,
À vous de porter l'oriflamme
Et de garder au fond de l'âme
Le goût de vivre en liberté,
Acceptez le défi, sinon
Les coquelicots se faneront
Au champ d'honneur.

Max Florence Sundial

In Rockcliffe Park, south of Rockcliffe Driveway and west of Sir Charles-Étienne Parkway stands a sundial that I call the Max Florence Sundial for lack of a better name. The text, below, from the sundial's plaque should explain.

MAX FLORENCE-2067 A.D.

In 1975, Torontonial Max Florence, to demonstrate his love for Canada, sent his life savings to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. To mark the donation, the federal government commissioned this unusual sundial.

These columns are from the former Carnegie Public Library of Ottawa (lager renamed Ottawa Public Library), which stood at the corner of Laurier Avenue and Metcalfe Street until its demolition in the early 1970s.

This library, unveiled in 1906 by Andrew Carnegie, was the only Carnegie Library in Ontario unveiled by the American benefactor.
