Major's Hill Park Round

In the southern centre of Major's Hill Park, west of Mackenzie Avenue, lies an oval in which there are lines pointing to the northeast. For lack of an official name I call this the Major's Hill Park Round. The lines point to the setting sun on the day of the summer solstice. Structures with information about the park and surrounding features stand on the edges of the round. Many people pass by here on their way to the Ottawa lock station of the Rideau Canal, the Chateau Laurier, Byward Market, the National Gallery of Canada, and other locations near the park.

Though Colonel By was undoubtedly the most notable resident of this property, these grounds were eventually named for his successor, Major Daniel Bolton. With the completion of the Rideau Canal, the military reserve gave way to stately trees and meandering pathways and Major's Hill became a popular retreat from the bustle of the lumber town.

A PLACE IN TIME

Before the arrival of the first Europeans, much of this area was covered by forest. This site was then transformed into a British military reserve, where Lieutenant-Colonel John By and his family established their residence.

A CAPITAL OASIS

On July 1, 1867, Canadians enjoyed the first of many celebrations to honour their country's birthday. The historic event was marked by a 101-gun salute from Major's Hill and by fireworks and revelry on nearby Parliament Hill. This festive mood echoed over the years as Major's Hill Park became a stage for weekly band concerts and, eventually, the home of an annual tulip festival.

As the city's first official park, Major's Hill was a favourite place for people to stroll or picnic and seemed destined, even then, to become an important green space.
