100th Anniversary of Armistice Tree

The 100th Anniversary of Armistice Tree stands next to the roadway in the northwest part of the Field of Honour, Section 27, the military legacy section of Beechwood Cemetery.

L'arbre du 100e anniversaire de l'Armistice se dresse à côté de la route dans la partie nord-ouest du Champ d'honneur, section 27, la section du cimetière militaire de Beechwood.

The maple tree that chain saw artist and master carver, Peter Van Adrichem, carved into the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Tree, had reached the end of its life cycle and ready to cut down. The carved tree depicts Brodie helmets near its base. These helmets were worn by all Canadian forces in WWI. The carving also depicts three maple leaves representing the three branches of the Canadian Armed Forces. Fifty-eight prominently displayed poppies represent the battle honours Canadian and Newfoundland regiments received in WWI. Near the base of the tree Adcrichem carved the phrases, "Lest we forget," and "Nous nous Souviendrons." The tree has become popular to visitors to the cemetery and pays tribute to the Canadian troops who fought in WWI.

L'érable que Peter Van Adrichem, maître sculpteur à la tronçonneuse, avait sculpté pour l'arbre du 100e anniversaire de l'Armistice, avait atteint la fin de sa vie et était prêt à être abattu. Près de sa base, l'arbre sculpté représente des casques Brodie. Ces casques étaient portés par tous les membres des forces canadiennes pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. La sculpture représente également trois feuilles d'érable représentant les trois branches des Forces armées canadiennes. Cinquante-huit coquelicots, bien en évidence, représentent les honneurs de guerre reçus par les régiments canadiens et terre-neuviens pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Près de sa base, Adcrichem a gravé les phrases « Lest we forget » et « Nous nous souviendrons ». Cet arbre est devenu populaire auprès des visiteurs du cimetière et rend hommage aux soldats canadiens qui ont combattu pendant la Première Guerre mondiale.
