Britannia Park Trolley Station

The Britannia Park trolley station occupies a location in Britannia Park northeast of the west end of Greenview Avenue.

The structure shown here, which now serves as a picnic shelter, from 1900 though 1959 served as the end of line station for street cars arriving from Ottawa centre. Street car tracks occupied both sides of the structure with a switching facility on it's west side where trolleys and street cars could turn around for the return trip.

In 1891, Thomas Ahearn and Warren Soper established an electric streetcar service, the Ottawa Electric Railway Company (OERC), to Ottawa. In 1900 the OERC bought the land around where this trolley station now stands. T hey built an amusement park at the location to attract visitors who paid to ride the trolley to the park. In 1948, The Ottawa Transport Commission (OTC), which the City of Ottawa owned, took over the OERC and its Britannia property. In 1959, the last trolley took its final journey on the line.
