| Sir Edward Robert Peacock |
An internationally renowned financier, Peacock was born near here in the former Congregational Church manse and educated at Queen's University in Kingston. He taught at Upper Canada College for seven years before joining the Dominion Securities Corporation, a prominent investment company, in 1902. Five years later he was transferred to London, England to manage the firm's European office. Acclaimed for his exceptional financial abilities, Peacock played an increasingly imporant role in the international securities market and in industrial organization and reconstruction as a director of the Bank of England (1921-24, 1929-46), the head of Baring Brothers and Company (1929-54) and a director of the Commonwealth Finance Company (1953-59). He also became a trusted adviser to the Royal Family and was knighted for his services in 1934.
Financier international de renom, E.R. Peacock est né prè d'ici, dans l'ancien presytière de l'église congrégationaliste. Après des études à l'Université Queen's, il enseigne pendant sept ans au Upper Canada College avant d'entrer, en 1902, à la Dominion Securities Corporation, une importante société de placement. Cinq ans plus tard, il est muté à Londres où il dirige la succersale européenne de l'enterprise. Salué pour ses exceptionnelles aptitudes financières, Peacock joue un rôle de plus en plus prépondéreant sur le marché des valeurs mobilières ainsi que dans l'organisation de l'industrie et la reconstruction, que ce soit à titre d'administrateur de la Bank of England (1921-1924, 1929-1946), de dirigeant de la Baring Brothers and Company (1929-1954) ou d'administrateur de la Commonwealth Finance Company (1953-1959). Conseiller écoute de la famille royale, il est fait chevalier en 1934.
