St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church

In Richmond, Ontario, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church occupies the east side of McBean Street south of Martin Street.

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church

St. Andrew's was the first Presbyterian congregation in Carleton County and was served primarily by itinerant preachers until the 1840's. A wooden church was constructed on this site in 1847 and replaced by the present brick church and spire in 1884. The church has several Gothic Revival features" it's arched windows, its entrance, and its three-bay facade. Over the years it has continued to be a hub of religious and social activity for Presbyterians in the village and surrounding farms.

Rideau Canal Promenade Ottawa Exhibition Plaques

The set of Rideau Canal Promenade plaques dealing with the Central Canada Exhibition occupy the southwest side of the Rideau Canal west of the Rideau Canal Western Pathway, east of Queen Elizabeth Driveway and a short distance north of Princess Patricia Way.

Streetcars and Suburbs

A little over 200 years ago, the land where you stand was forested and uninhabited — well beyond the city limits. The building of the Ottawa Electric Railway in 1891, and the subdivision of church (glebe) lands owned by St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, helped create a community — the Glebe — within easy reach of downtown Ottawa.

A Fair to Remember

Agricultural fairs provided an opportunity to catch up with friends and neighbours, learn about innovations in science and technology, and plan next year's breeding and planting. The Ottawa Agricultural Society hosted the first Canal-side exhibition in 1869. The midway later dominated the Ex, but its agricultural focus lasted for decades.

Une foire historique

Les foires agricoles représentent une occasion de renouer avec les amis et les voisins, de s'informer sur les innovations scientifiques et technologiques et de planifier l'élevage et les semeces pour l'année suivante. La Société agricole d'Ottawa organise la première exposiion du bord du canal en 1869. Display Celebrating 150 Years of the Governor General's Foot Guards

The display that celebrates 150 years of the Governor General's Foot Guards stands inside Ottawa City Hall on Laurier Avenue West, west of the Rideau Canal. The display is in the main hallway on the first floor.

This stand of colours was rededicated to the City of Ottawa on the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of the Regiment, in the presence of His Worship Jim Watson, Mayor of the City of Ottawa, on June 4, 2022.

COLOURS OF THE
GOVERNOR GENERAL'S FOOT GUARDS

On June 30, 1997, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II presented the Governor General's Foot Guards with their Eighth Stand of Colours. In accordance with tradition, the Regiment's old Colours were retired to a place of honour.

The Seventh Stand of Colours of the Governor General's Foot Guards was presented to the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton on September 26, 1997 in recognition of the 125 years of service that the people of the Region have given to the Regiment. On the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of the Regiment, the stand of Colours was rededicated to the people of the City of Ottawa on June 4, 2022.

The Colours of the Regiment are the unit's most prized possession. The Seventh Stand was presented by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Jeanne Sauvé, PC, CC, CMM, DStJ, CD on July 16, 1984 at Rideau Hall.

Historically, Colours were used as a rallying point for a unit on the battlefield. The Colours of the Governor General's Foot Guards were never carried in action or in a theatre of war, however, they are visible symbols of pride, honour and devotion to Sovereign and Country.

The Royal or First (Queen's) Colour is gules (crimson) with the crest of the Royal Arms for Canada in the centre, ensigned with the Imperial Crown enamelled in proper colours.

The Second (Regimental) Colour is the National Flag proper. The Number 1 Company Badge ensigned with the Royal Crown is centered on the maple leaf. At the stem of the maple leaf, upon a field of vert, a beaver couchant holding in its mouth three maple leaves conjoined on one step proper.

Battle Honours are awarded to provide public recognition and to record a combatant unit's active participation in battle against a formed and armed enemy. All battle honours are considered equal and are therefore listed in the chronological order in which they are worn by the Regiment. Twenty-two of the Regiment's battle honours are emblazoned on each Colour. The Regiment was awarded its latest battle honour, AFGHANISTAN, in 2014.

The Colours are to remain in place to decay and disintigrate until they cease to exist.

Le 30 juin 1997, Sa Majesté la reine Elizabeth II a présenté le huitième ensemble de drapeaux consacrés au régiment Governor General's Foot Guards. Selon la coutume, les anciens drapeaux du régiment ont ensuite été installés à une place d'honneur.

Le septième ensemble de drapeaux consacrés du Governor General's Foot Guards a été présenté à la municipalité régionale d'Ottawa-Carleton le 26 septembre 1997. Il s'agit d'un témoignage  de reconnaissance envers les gens de la région qui ont servi dans le régiment au cours des 125 dernières années. À l'occasion du 150e anniversaire du régiment, l'énsemble de drapeaux a été consacré de nouveau aux habitants de la Ville d'Ottawa, le 4 juin 2022.

Les drapeaux régimentaires sont la possession la plus précieuse d'une unité. Le septième ensemble de drapeaux consacrés fut présenté par Son Excellence la très honorable Jeanne Sauvé, CP, CC, DStJ, CD le 16 juillet 1984 à Rideau Hall.

Traditionnellement, les drapeaux consacrés constituaient des points de ralliement pour une unité sur le champ de bataille. On n'a jamais fait flotter les drapeaux consacrés du Governor General's Foot Guards au combat ou sur un théâtre de guerre, cependant ils demeurent des symboles visibles de fierté, d'honneur et de dévouement d'une unité envers la souveraien et le pays.

Le Drapeau royal (ou Drapeau consacré de la Reine) est de couleur gueules (rouge) et porte au centre les armoiries royales du Canada surmontées de la couronne impériale émaillée au naturel.

Le second drapeau consacré régimentaire est le drapeau national du Canada au naturel. L'insigne de la Compagnie no 1 surmonté de l'emblème de la couronne impériale est centré sur la feuille d'érable. À la base de la feuille d'érable, sur champ vert, se trouve un castor couché tenant dans sa gueule trois feuille d'érable sur une seule tige.

Les honneurs de bataille sont attribués pour reconnaître publiquement et pour consigner la participation active au combat d'une unité de combat contre un corps ennemi structuré et armé. Tous les honneurs de bataille sont jugés être de valeur égale et sont donc énumérés dans l'ordre chronologique dans lequel ils ont été obtenus par les régiments intéressés. Vingtdeux des honneurs de bataille de l'unité ornent chaque drapeau consacré. Le Régiment a reçu son dernier honneur de bataille, AFGHANISTAN, en 2014.

Les drapeaux consacrés doivent rester en place jusqu'à ce qu'ils se détériorent et se désintègrent complètement.
