The Iceberg Sculpture

The Iceberg Sculpture stands at the southeast corner of O'Connor Street and McLeod Street at the west side of the Canadian Museum of Nature's grounds.

The Iceberg is composed of welded stainless steel parts; the tallest extending 13 metres high. Smaller pieces represent ice chunks are found at the base.

Around the Iceberg is the Arctic tundra. the sculpture's size dramatizes the natural difference in scale that define Canada's Arctic, where icebergs and towering mountains contrast with tiny plants in a treeless terrain.

Bill Lishman has been a sculptor since 1962. A Fellow with the Canadian Geographical Society, he has travelled extensively in the Arctic and Antarctic where he became inspired by the spectacular and monumental forms of icebergs.

The sculpture was fabricated by Pure Ingenuity Inc. of Kingston, Ontario.

L'Iceberg se compose de pièces d'acier inoxydable soudées. La plus grande s'élève à 13 mètres de hautier, tandis que les plus petites repréntent des morceaux de glace au pied de l'iceberg.

L'Iceberg se dresse au milieau de la toundra arctique. Sa taille imposante symbolise les différences d'échelle qui définissent l'Arctique canadien, où les icebergs et les montagnes majestueuses dominent un paysage sans arbres couvet de plantes miniscules.

Sculpteur depuis 1962, Bill Lishman est fellow de la Société géographique royale du Canada. Lors de ses nombreux voyages dans l'Arctique et l'Antarctique, il s'est laissé inspirer par les formes spectaculaires et monumentales des icebergs.

La sculpture est un fabrication de Pure Ingenuity Inc. de Kingston, en Ontario.

VETERANS CHARTER

 A programme of innovative social legislation, known collectively as the Veterans Charter, provided an unprecedented level of benefits to those who served in the Second World War. Advanced by the Canadian government, the Charter eased the transition from military to civilian life. It offered over a million ex-service men and women the opportunity to obtain an education, re-enter the work force, build homes, buy land and start businesses. The Charter accelerated economic expansion and led the way in extending social programmes to all Canadians.

LA CHARTE DES ANCIENS COMBATTANTS

Des mesures législatives fort innovatrices, mises en place par le gouvernement canadien et généralement connues sous le nom de Charte des anciens combattants, procurèrent un nombre impressionnant de bénéfices à tous ceux qui servirent la patrie au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Facilitant le passage de la vie militaire à la vie civile, la Charte offrit à plus d’un million de vétérans l’opportunité de parfaire leurs études, de réintégrer le marché du travail, de se construire une maison, d’acheter une terre ou de se lancer en affaires. Elle favorisa ainsi la croissance économique et pava le chemin à l’instauration de programmes sociaux pour tous les Canadians.

Diamond Jubilee Park

Diamond Jubilee Park was officially dedicated on December 18, 2012 by the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable David Johnston.

The park commemorated the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and honours the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada.

Parc du Jubilé de diamant

Le parc du Jubilé de diamant a été officiellement nommé le 18 décembre 2012 par le très honourable David Johnston, Gouverneur general du Canada.

La dénomination du parc vise à commémorer la celebration du la reine Elizabeth II, ainsi qu’à souligner le 60e anniversaire de son ascension au tróne en tant que reine du Canada.
