M1942 Zis 3 Division Gun

In northeast of the Capital Funeral Home & Cemetery grounds a M1942 Zis 3 Division Gun stands south east of the Veterans Wall of Remembrance. Entrance to the cemetery grounds abuts the west side of Prince of Wales Drive between Lodge Road and Maple Hill Way.

This gun was designed and built in Russia during the Second World War. It was serving the Serbian Forces during the Bosnian War in 1993 and was captured by Canadian troops.

Andy Moffitt Trail Plaque

The Andy Moffit Trail connects Berrigan Drive to Hornchurch Lane. The plaque for the trail occupies a large rock on the south side of Berrigan Drive east of Edgeware Drive.

Andy Moffitt Trail

This trail is named in commemoration of the life and memory of Andy Moffitt.

Andy was known to be an extraordinary young man, who loved his family, friends and sports. Andy was a humble, honourable and brave soul. He was an aspiring engineering student who tragically lost his life on December 23, 1998 trying to protect the lives of his friends. He received the Medal of Bravery posthumously from the Governor General of Canada.

At the tender age of 23 Andy had intelligence, wisdom and compassion beyond his years. He touched the lives of all who knew him and was cherished by his parents and brothers.

Andy played in the woods here as a child and made many happy memories in the heart of Barrhaven.

Dedicated on this 27th day of October, 2010

Sentier Andy-Moffitt

Ce sentier est désigné pour rendre hommage à la vie et à la mémoire de Andy Moffitt.

Andy était un jeune homme extraordinaire, qui aimait sa famille, ses amis et les sports. Il était une personne humble; honorable et brave. Étudiant pour devenir ingénieur, Andy a perdu la vie de façon tragique le 23 décembre 1998 en voulant protéger celle de ses amis. Il a reçu la Médaille de la bravoure de la gouverneure générale du Canada après son décès.

À l'âge de 23 ans, Andy était une personne très intelligente, dotée d'une immense sagesse et d'une grande compassion. Il a touché la vie de tous ceux et de toutes celles qui le connaissaient et il était aimé de tout cœur par ses parents et ses frères.

Lorsqu'il était enfant, Andy jouait dans les bois environnants et tous en garde un bon souvenir ici à Barrhaven.

Jockvale School No. 10

Jockvale School No. 10 occupies the northeast corner of Strandherd Drive and Jockvale Road, with access on Jockvale Road.

L'école Jockvale n° 10 occupe le coin nord-est de Strandherd Drive et de Jockvale Road, avec un accès sur Jockvale Road.

The Jockvale Heritage School, originally a log structure from 1841 became a brick building in 1906. At its peak sixty to seventy, mostly Irish Catholic, pupils in eight grades attended the one room school. In 1857 the school hired its first woman teacher. During the Second World War the school became a distribution centre for ration coupon books.

L'école Jockvale Heritage School, à l'origine une construction en rondins datant de 1841, fut transformée en bâtiment de briques en 1906. À son apogée, soixante à soixante-dix élèves, majoritairement catholiques irlandais, fréquentaient cette école à classe unique, répartis en huit niveaux. En 1857, l'école embaucha sa première institutrice. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle servit de centre de distribution de coupons de rationnement.

The school board closed the school in 1965 as it lacked an auditorium and did not offer instruction in French and music. Since then, various groups including the Lions Club, The New Horizon Social Club, and the South Nepean Muslim Community have used the school for their meetings and functions. Reports from custodial staff indicate the building is haunted.

Le conseil scolaire a fermé l'école en 1965, faute d'auditorium et parce qu'elle n'offrait pas de cours de français ni de musique. Depuis, divers groupes, dont le Lions Club, le New Horizon Social Club et la communauté musulmane de South Nepean, utilisent l'école pour leurs réunions et activités. Selon le personnel d'entretien, le bâtiment serait hanté.
