Cross of Sacrifice

In Beechwood Cemetery, the Cross of Sacrifice occupies the central place within the Field of Honour in Canada's National Military Cemetery just east of the centre of Beechwood Cemetery.

Prolific British architect, Sir Reginald Theodore Blomfield (1856-1942), in 1918 designed the Cross of Sacrifice. The cross is present in Commonwealth war cemeteries that have forty or more graves. The Imperial War Graves Commission (now the Commonwealth War Graves Commission) erected the Cross of Sacrifice in Beechwood Cemetery in 1959. The sword on the cross, made in bronze, points downward, symbolizing a time of peace.

Sir Reginald Theodore Blomfield

"To the honoured memory of those sailors, soldiers and airmen who gave their lives for their country in two world wars and who lie buried in this cemetery."
