Canada 150 Gardens

The Ottawa Horticultural Society and The Friends of the Central Experimental Farm, in celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary, renovated two garden beds at the entrance to the Experimental Farm's Ornamental Gardens, on the southwest corner of National Capital Commission Scenic Driveway and Prince of Wales Drive.

For Canada's 150th Anniversary, these two garden beds were renovated by teh Ottawa Horticultural Society (OHS) and The Friends of the Central Experimental Farm (FCEF). The design principles originally used by R. Warren Oliver in 1936 provided inspiration for the plant selections to reflect William T. Macoun's favourite plants. Macoun was Dominion Horticulturalist from 1910 to 1933 and OHS President in 1899.

Pour le 150e anniversaire du Canada, l'Ottawa Horticultural Society (OHS) et les Amis de la Ferme expérimentale centrale (AFEC) ont rénové ces deux plates-bandes. Les principes de conception utilisés à l'origine par R. Warren Oliver ent 1936 ont inspiré les choix de plantes pour refléter les plantes préférées de William T. Macoun, qui fut horticulteur du Dominion de 1910 à 1933 et président de l'OHS en 1899.

Chesterville WWI Cenotaph

In Chesterville, Ontario, south of Chesterville Queen Street and west of Main Street North, in Veterans Memorial Park stands Chesterville's cenotaph memorializing those lost in action in the Great War, now known as Wordl War One.

Between the two world wars, 1918 to 1939, what is now referred to as World War One, was The Great War. The number of Canadian deaths due to the Great War is estimated between 56,639 and 66,655 and possibly higher. Almost every community in Canada, no matter how small, suffered losses in that war and during the time between wars many communities built and placed memorials commemorating their fallen. After World War Two, many of the memorials placed to remember the losses from World War One were added to or replaced to include losses for the second world war and then Korea, United Nations Peacekeeping, and now, Afghanistan. Chesterville has kept their Great War cenotaph unchanged and exclusive to its original intent. It is the fourth such memorial I have photographed that is solely dedicated to World War One losses.

Sgt. Harold Adam Merkley, 54th Batt., C.E.F. (Canadian Expeditionary Force), killed at Vimy, July 19, 1919, age 22 yrs.

Pte. W. B. C. Moodie, 49th Batt., C.E.F., killed at Vimy, Apr. 9, 1917, age 33 yrs.

Pte. Ransom Howard Hess, Princess Patricia Light Infantry, C.E.F., killed at Battle of Parvillers, Aug. 13, 1918, age 17 yrs.

Pte. Henry Coughler, 28th Batt., C.E.F. died of wounds in hospital, France, Nov. 1, 1918, age 33 yrs.

Sir Charles Stanley Monck Plaque Revisited

On the Rideau Hall grounds the plaque commemorating Sir Charles Stanley Monck occupies a large boulder to the southeast of where the two paths from the main gate, and the corner of Rideau Gate and Thomas Street converge.

SIR CHARLES STANLEY MONCK
LORD MONCK 1819 – 1894

An Irish peer and former member of the Palmerston Administration, Lord Monck was named Governor General of British North America in 1861. During the American Civil War he laboured to keep hostilities from spreading north to British territory. An early proponent of the desireability of union of the British North American provinces, Monck devoted his energies and the prestige of his office to the cause of Confederation. His appointment was extended to allow him to become the first Governor General of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. He retired to his estates in Ireland the following year.

De noblesse irlandaise, ancien membre du gouvernement britannique, Lord Monck fut nomme Gouverneur général de l'Amérique britannique en 1861. Pendant la guerre de Sécession américaine, il veilla à ce que les hostilités ne débordent pas sur le territoire britannique. Convaincu dès lors qu'il aurait avantage à unir les provinces britanniques de l'Amérique du Nord, is consacra son énergie et le prestige de sa fonction à pomouvoir la cause de la Confédération. Son mandat ayant été prolongé à cette fin, il devint le premier Gouverneur général du Canada en 1867. L'année suivane, il se retira en Irlande.

Linda Thom Monument

The Linda Thom Monument occupies a place in Lind Thom Park on the west side of Bank Street just north of the Rideau River.

Confederation Boulevard Plaque

The plaque commemoration Confederation Boulevard occupies a place on the north side of Princess Avenue east of the roundabout that joins Sussex Drive, Rideau Gate and Princess Avenue.

CONFEDERATION BOULEVARD

Since the late 19th century, the Governor General of Canada and foreign dignitaries on state visits have used the ceremonial route that begins at Rideau Hall (behind you) to travel to Parliament Hill. Today known as Confederation Boulevard, this route also serves as Canada's Discovery Route. It symbolically links the downtown cores of Ottawa and Gatineau, forming the heart of the Capital Region.

This plaque was installed by the National Capital Commission.

LE BOULEVARD DE LA CONFEDERATION

Depuis la fin du 19^e siècle, le gouverneur général du Canada ainsi que les dignitaires étrangers en visite d'État utilisent une route protocolaire qui débute à l'entrée de Rideau Hall(derrière vous) pour atteindre la colline du parlement. Aujourd'hui appelé le boulevard de la Conféderation, ce parcours d'honneur sert également de voie de la découverte du Canada. Il relie symboliquement les centres villes d'Ottawa et de Gatineau por former le cœur de la capitale.
