Diamond Jenness Plaque

The plaque commemorating Diamond Jenness hangs on the wall in the staircase foyer just inside the front doors of the Canadian Museum of Nature just south of where Metcalfe Street joins McLeod Street.

La plaque commémorative de Diamond Jenness est accrochée au mur du hall d'entrée de l'escalier, juste à l'intérieur des portes d'entrée du Musée canadien de la nature, au sud de l'endroit où la rue Metcalfe rejoint la rue McLeod.

DIAMOND JENNESS
1886–1969

Diamond Jenness was born in New Zealand and educated there and at Oxford. After field work in New Guinea he joined the 1913 Canadian Arctic Expedition, embarking on the career that made him the dean of Canadian Anthropologists. Although known for his work on the Copper Eskimos and his identification of the Dorset culture, he did field studies of many other native groups and his Indians of Canada (1931) was long considered a definitive work. Jenness retired in 1947 after a distinguished career with the National Museum and the Geographical Board, but continued writing for two decades.

Jenness naquit en Nouvelle–Zélande et étudia à Oxford. Après des travaux en Nouvelle–Guinée, il se joignit à l'Expédition canadienne dans l'Arctique, en 1913, commençant ainsi sa remarkable carrière d'anthropologue. Surtout connu pour ses travaux sur les Esquimaux du cuivre et pour son identification de la culture Dorset, il étudia pourtant d'autres groupes d'aborigènes, et son ouvrage Indians of Canada (1931) fut longtemps l'œuvre maîtresse dans le domaine. En 1947, Jenness résigna ses fonctions au Musée national et à la Commission des lieux géographiques, mais il continua de publier jusqu'à sa mort.

Tubman House occupies the southeast corner of Crichton Street and Union Street in New Edinburgh, Ottawa.

Arctic Tundra Plaque

The plaque about the Arctic Tundra occupies a place on the southeast corner of McLeaod Street and O'Connor Street on the grounds of the Canadian Museum of Nature.

A unique and diverse ecosystem

Arctic plants are well-adapted to survive a short and cool summer with up to 24 hours of daylight.

Many species grow low to the ground, out of the harsh Arctic wind. Some grow as cushions, preserving heat inside a compact mass. Others are insulated with dense, woolly hair, or are able to turn just their flowers towards the sun, using their petals to catch the sun's heat.

As the climate of the North changes, so will the plants that grow there. Already researchers are finding shrubs such as the dwarf birch (Betula glandulosa) growing fuller, higher and larger than ever before. This "shrubification" of the Arctic is one of the first definitive effects of climate change on Arctic vegetation.

Les plantes arctiques se sont adaptées aux été brefs et fais qui offrent jusqu'à 24 heures de lumière par jour.

De nombreuses espèces rampent au sol afin d'éviter les vents furieux de l'Arctique. D'autres forment des coussins, qui conservent la chaleur au sein de leur masse compacte. Plusieurs sont dotées de poils denseset duveteux qui les protègent du froid alors que certaines tournent leurs fleurs vers le soleil afin que leurs pétales captent la chaleur des rayons.

À mesure que le climat du Nord se modifie, la flore qui y pousse se transforme. Déjà, les chercheurs observent que certains arbusted comme le bouleau glanduleux (Betula glandulosa) sont plus hauts, plus gros et plus fournis qu'avant. Cette « arbustification » est un des premiers effets évidents des changements climatiques sur la végétation arctique.

Installed on February 20, 2018 by His Worship Jim Watson, Mayor of the City of Ottawa and members of City Council marking Ottawa's involvement in Canada's sesquicentennial celebrations.

Citizens of Ottawa are invited to open this time capsule as part of Canada's bicentennial celebrations in 2067.

C'est une forte berge, au large flanc de glaise,

Le Rideau passe au bas, riant sous son flot noir.
D'ici, le long des eaux je puis apercevoir

THE RIVER

It is a strong bank, with a wide clay side,
Abruptly cut like a cliff!
The Rideau passes below, laughing under its black flow.
From here, along the waters I can see
the reeds lined up like a fence,
Where cries, at dawn, a great sullen heron.
Narrow, the river at least has its attraction
Of moving waves, with, entering under the forest,
All its recesses, like alcoves,
Let the purple gladioli finish flowering at the edge.

Our horizon is wheat, no more distant
Than the sky, and in the water its uncertain mirage.

The Poets' Pathway honours Canada's poets, especially Ottawa's historic poets, and the lands that inspired them. It memorializes the literary heritage of the Confederation Poets and francophone poets of the time — the earliest voices of our distinctive Canadian tradition.
