George Watson Gazebo

The gazebo commemorating George Watson stands in Davidson Park on the northeast corner of Ryerson Avenue and Cortleigh Drive.

George Watson Gazebo

This gazebo is named in recognition of the excellence, courage and exceptional service of George Watson.

George W. Watson (1919-2014) joined the Canadian Army in 1940, at the age of 21. Following his training he was posted to the 1st Special Services Force. This joint elite American-Canadian unit, later referred to as "The Devil's Brigade," was known for carrying out particularly dangerous and arduous assignments.

George served in Italy, joining Operation Husky, and aided the Allied liberation of Italy. Towards the end of the war, George was wounded by shrapnel and honourably discharged. In recognition of his contributions George was awarded several medals of honour, bravery and distinction.

After settling in Ottawa, George spent the last thirty years of his life as a resident of Heart's Desire.

George W. Watson (1919-2014) s'ext engagédans l'Armée Canadienne en 1940, à l'âge de 21 ans. Après son entrainement militaire, il a été affecté à la Première Force de Service special, unite d'élite canado-américaine surnommée par la suite « Brigade du diable », en raison de la dangerosité et de la difficulté de ses missions.

George a servi en Italie, où il a participé à l'Operation Husky et à la liberation du pays par les Alliés. Vers la fin de la guerre, blesse par un éclat d'obus, il a été libéré honorablement. En reconnaissance de ses contributions, il a reçu plusieurs médailles d'honneur, de bravoure et de distinction.

George est venu s'installer à Ottawa où il a passé ses trente dernières années dans le secteur de Heart's Desire.

RCMP Band Plaque

The plaque commemorating the RCMP Band occupies a place in the south west of the RCMP Memorial Cemetery in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.

RCMP Band

From the outset of the long and colourful history of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, music and bands contributed to the Force's culture, traditions, and overall success. As playing a musical instrument was a very popular pastime in the late 1800's, many members of the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) were also capable musicians. The first NWMP band was formed at Swan River, Manitoba, where it gave its premiere performance on May 24, 1876. In the fall of that year, the group also played during ceremonies for the signing of Treaty No. 6 at Forts Carleton and Pitt, and in 1877, performed the same role at Blackfoot Crossing for the signing of Treaty No. 7. The success of the Swan River band on those occasions quickly let to similar groups being formed at the many NWMP forts on the Prairies, and at Dawson City in the Yukon.

In 1938, efforts by Commissioner S.T. Wood to rekindle the early traditions and character of the Mounted Police led to the formation of the RCMP Band. Over the years, members of the Band regularly took part in ceremonies, celebrations, and events of national historic importance, welcomed royalty and heads of state and represented Canada and the RCMP abroad. Before ceasing operations in 1994, the Band traveled extensively across Canada and abroad promoting closer ties between the Force and the communities it served. Accomplished, entertaining, and impressive in concert, the RCMP Band was revered by enthusiastic audience of all ages and walks of life. It was a highly respected, well organized and beloved Canadian institution that performed in more locations throughout our great country, than any other musical aggregation in history.

L'Orchestre de la GRC

Dès le d0233but de la longue histoire colorée de la Gendarmarie royale du Canada, la musique et les orchestres ont contribué à la culture, aux traditions et au succès global de la Gendarmerie. Comme jouer d'un instrument de musique était un passe-temps très Populaire à la fin des années 1800, de nombreux membres de la Police à cheval du Nord-Ouest (P.C.N.-O.) étaient également des musiciens compétents. Le premier orchestra de la P.C.N.-O. a été formé à Swan River, au Manitoba, où il a donné sa première representation le 24 mai 1876. À l'automne de la même anné, le groupe a également joué lors des cérémonies de signature du Traité no 6 aux forts Carleton et Pitt et, en 1877, il a assume le même role à Blackfoot Crossing pour la signature du Traité no 7. Le succès de l'Orchestre de Swan River à ces occasions a conduit rapidement à la formation de groups semblables dans de nombreux forts de la P.C.N.-O. dans les Prairies et à Dawson City au Yukon.
