This existing barrier was salvaged from the former bridge that once crossed the river here. It has been reinforced for your safety. The barrier will be replaced by a new fence later this summer matching the decorative fence in the park.

On September 24, 2015, Ottawa City Councillor, David Chernushenko, dedicated Percy Taverner Park to the memory of Percy Taverner, ornithologist, architect, and a former resident of the neighbourhood – Old Ottawa South.

Born Percy Algernon Fowler in Guelph, Ontario, when his parents divorced and his mother remarried, he took his father's surname, Tavernier, and later changed it to Taverner. From 1912 to 1942, Taverner served as the first ornithologist at the National Museum of Canada. His ornithological activities included helping to establish Point Pelee National Park and other bird sanctuaries in Canada and serving as president of the Ottawa Field Naturalists' Club and founding its journal, The Canadian Field Naturalist.

Percy Taverner died in Ottawa in 1947 and is buried in Beechwood Cemetery.

Corktown Footbridge

The Corktown Footbridge spans the Rideau Canal opposite where Somerset Street West connects to the Queen Elizabeth Driveway.

CORKTOWN BRIDGE

The dedication of this bridge honours the Corktown community founded by the Irish canal workers and their families who lived alongside the Rideau Canal just north of this site from 1826, when work began on the Canal, until the 1840s.

Once proposed as a six-lane arterial bridge in the 1960s and then a concrete walkway planned to link the Campus Transitway Station in the 1980s, a crossing over the Rideau Canal at this location was first suggested a hundred years earlier.
