SMITHS FALLS BASCULE BRIDGE
This Scherzer Rolling Lift bascule bridge is an outstanding early example of a novel concept in movable bridges, developed by William Scherzer, and American engineer. It combines the balanced counterweight of a conventional bascule bridge, with a unique rolling lift motion that all but eliminates friction. Erected in 1912-1913 to carry the Canadian Northern Railway main line across the Rideau Canal, a busy steamboat navigation system, the bridge was renowned for its ease and speed of operation, proving the efficacy of the concept.

LE POINT BASCULANT DE SMITHS FALLS
Voici un excellent exemple des tout premiers ponts basculants de type Scherzer, érigé selon un concept fort remarquable dévloppé par l'ingénieur américain William Scherzer. L'ouvrage allie le contrepoids aérien d'un pont basculant conventionnel à un mécanisme de roulement exceptionnel qui élimine pratiquement toute friction. Construit en 1912 et 1913 par le chemin de fer Canadien du Nord pour franchir le canal Rideau, une voie de navigation fortement achalandée à l'époque, le pont était renommé pour son fonctionnement aisé et rapice révélant l'excellence de sa conception.

Bascule Bridge
This Scherzer rolling lift railway bridge was renowned for its ground breaking technology and currently stands as one of the few remaining bridges of this kind left in Canada. Built by the Dominion Bridge Company in 1912-1913 for the Canadian National Railway, the bridge was designated to operate either manually or with an electric motor. Although the bridge closed down in 1978, its proud history remains preserved after being designated as a National Historic Site in 1983.
Pont Bascule
Ce point ferroviaire à trains roulants Scherzer était réputé pour sa technologie de pointe et constitue actuellement l'un des rares ponts de ce type restant au Canada. Construit par Dominion Bridge en 1912-1913 pour le chemin du fer Canadien National, le pont était conçu pour être exploité manuellement ou avec un moteur électrique. Bien que le pont ait été fermé en 1978, son fier passé reste intact après avour été désigné lieu historique national en 1983.
