John G. Mlacak Centre

The John G. Mlacak Centre, comprising a public library, civic art gallery, community centre, senior centre and arena, occupies a location in Kanata, north of Campeau Drive at the intersection with Hawkstone Gate.

An accomplished humanist, engineer, politician, mentor, leader and artist, John G. Mlacak loved the beauty of his country and was dedicated to his community.

Regional Councillor, Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton; Commissioner, National Capital Commission; Telecommunications Innovator; Professional Artist (Society of Canadian Artists, Ontario Society of Artists, Lucille Broadbent Award for Artistic Achievement).

The John G. Mlacak Centre is named in honour of John's pioneering workd in the original development of Kanata. During his time as Councillor and Reeve of March Township, the communities of Beaverbrook and Katimavik were developed along with the first municipal business park, combined fire hall and library, child care centre, senior citizens housing, and the Pinhey property. Curbside waste, newspaper and glass collection was initiated under his leadership.

Conseiller régional, Municipalité régionale d'Ottawa-Carleton; Commissaire, Commission de la capitale nationale; Innovateur du secteur des télécommunications; Artiste professionnel (Société des artistes canadiens, Ontario Society of Artists, prix Lucille Broadbent pour la réalisation artistique).

Le Centre John G. Mlacak est nommé en l'honneur du travail de pionnier qu'a réalisé M. Mlacak dans le développement initial de Kanata. Durant ses mandats de conseiller et de préfet du Canton de March, les communaoutés de Beaverbrook et de Katimavik ont été le théâtre de divers projets d'aménagement, dont la première zone de parc d'affaires municipale, un immeuble destiné à accueillir ainsi qu'une garderie, une résidence pour personnes âgées et la propriété Pinhey. Une collecte sélective en bordure de rue de verre et du papier journal a également été lancée sous sa direction.
