Sir William Buell Richards Plaque

The plaque commemorating Sir William Buell Richards occupies a place, mounted on the wall to the left of the front door of the Leeds and Grenville County Court House on the north side of John Ross Matheson Way in Brockville, Ontario.



SIR WILLIAM BUELL RICHARDS
1815-1889


Born at Brockville and called to the bar of Upper Canada in
1837, Richards represented Leeds in the Legislative Assembly
(1848-53) and served as Attorney General for Canada West in the
Hincks-Morin administration (1851-3). Appointed puisne judge of
the Court of Common Pleas in 1853, he became Chief Justice of
that Court in 1863 and Chief Justice of the Ontario Queen's
Bench in 1868. When the Supreme Court of Canada was formed
in 1875, Richards became its first Chief Justice and continued in
that position until his retirement in 1879. He died at Ottawa.

Né à Brockville et admis au barreau du Haut-Canada en 1837,
Richards fut élu député de Leeds en 1848 et devint procureur
général du Haut-Canada dans le cabinet de Hincks-Morin (1851-
53). Nommé juge à la Cour des plaids communs en 1853, il en
devint le juge en chef en 1863, avant d'accéder au même poste à
la Cour du Banc de la Reine en 1868. Lors de la création de la
Cour suprême du Canada en 1875, Richards fut nommé juge en
chef et conserva ce poste jusqu'à sa retraite en 1878. Il mourut à
Ottawa.
