| OGLE ROBERT GOWAN 1803-1876 A prominent provincial politician, Gowan was born in County Wexford, Ireland. He came to Upper Canada in 1829 and immediately immersed himself in political affairs. Drawing upon his experience with the Irish Orange Order, Gowan established the Grand Orange Lodge of British North America in 1830 and, as the first Canadian grand master, ably guided the organization during its formative years. In 1836 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly, representing this area intermittently until 1861. A shrewd strategist and an effective oragor, he gradually broadened his influence, using his newspaper, the "Brockville Statesman", to promote his political views. Following his retirement from provincial politics, Gowan continued to work for the retention of strong ties with Britain, a cause he had upheld throughout his career. | OGLE ROBERT GOWAN 1803-1876 Politicien provincial très connu, Gowan naquit dans le comté de Wexford, en Irlande. Venu au Haut-Canada en 1829, il se lança immédiatement dans la politique. Son expérience dans l'Ordre d'Orange irlandais lui permit de fonder en 1830 la Grande loge d'Orange d'Amerique du Nord britannique qu'en tant que permier Grand maître canadien il guida habilement au cours de ses premières années. Élu à l'Assemblée législative en 1836, il représenta cette région jusqu'en 1861. Stratège et orateur habile, il étendit graduellement son influence et propagea ses idées politiques grâce à son journal, le "Brockville Statesman". Lorsqu'il quita la scène politique provinciale, Gowan continua à oeuvrer pour conserver de forts liens avec la Grande-Brtagne, cause qu'il avait défendue tout au long de sa carrière.
