In Ottawa, the plaque commemorating the first tree planted in the Scoutrees program occupies a place in front of Scouts Canada Headquarters on the north side of Baseline Road between Clyde Avenue and Merivale Road. Unfortunately the first tree planted is no longer there.
The Scoutrees program with Scouts Canada provides Scouts at all levels with the opportunity to participate in the positive environmental activity of planting trees. His Excellency Governor General Jules Leger, Chief Scout of Canada, officially launched Scoutrees on May 9th, 1974.
Scouts Canada has issued guidelines for scouting groups to participate in the Scoutrees program. A tree planting project involves planning, fund raising, purchasing trees and equipment and determining a location and time to plant trees. Those who donate $20 or more to the project receive a tax receipt from Scouts Canada. Usually a Scoutrees project involves the interaction of scouts from all levels of scouting.
Scoutrees does not limit where trees can be planted. Public and private land for planting trees will serve, as planting trees benefits the environment wherever the scouts plant them.
