Upper Beveridges Lockstation

Upper Beveridges Lockstation occupies a location on the Tay Canal north of Port Elmsley Road and about a half a kilometre northwest of Lower Beveridges Lockstation. Access to Upper Beveridges by car is normally closed. One may park at Lower Beveridges and walk to the site.

The Tay Canal
The Age of Recreation

The opening of the second Tay Canal ushered in a new era when the ladies and gentlemen sought rejuvenating yet cultured adventures in the great outdoors. Boating became the ideal pursuit for Perth residents and the canal a perfect connection to the Rideau Lakes.

Special excursions aboard luxury steamers became popular as soon as the Tay Canal officially opened in 1890. Over the next ten years small dual-purpose steamers gradually took over the excursion business. Eventually, private pleasure craft wer the most common boats on the Tay as Perth residents piloted their canoes, sailboats, skiffs, steam yachts and gas launches down to the Rideau Lakes. The boating boom on the Tay subsided in the 1930's when automobiles relegated the canal to a "backseat" position.

Today, boaters have rediscovered the Tay Canal... a leisurely cruise "up the avenue" makes a pleasant day trip.
