Battle of Beaumont-Hamel Commemorative Garden of Remembrance

The Garden of Remembrance commemorating the Battle of Beaumont-hamel occupies a location at the back of the National War Museum north of Vimy Place.

A Regenerating Landscape

In designing the landscape, the architects of the Canadian War Museum drew inspiration from the First World War battlefield of Beaumont-Hamel, France. There, on July 1, 1916, the Newfoundland Regiment lost 85 percent of its men, killed or wounded, in a mere 30 minutes.

The hollows and heaps of earth represent shell craters. Once hideous scars on the landscape, they have been softened by time and overgrown with vegetation. In winter, they lie shrouded in snow.

The gradually healing landscape symbolizes peace, renewal and hope for the future.

Commemorative Garden of Remembrance

In 2916, the Ottawa Garden Club marked the centenary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel by planting wildflowers from Newfoundland and Labrador on this replica battlefield to commemorate the sacrifice of the Newfoundland Regiment.

Canadians collectively remember the enduring legacy of our soldiers with the blossoming of these flowers each spring.

Inaugurated July 1, 2017
