Sir Charles Stanley Monck Plaque Revisited

On the Rideau Hall grounds the plaque commemorating Sir Charles Stanley Monck occupies a large boulder to the southeast of where the two paths from the main gate, and the corner of Rideau Gate and Thomas Street converge.

LORD MONCK 1819 – 1894


An Irish peer and former member of the Palmerston Administration, Lord Monck was named Governor General of British North America in 1861. During the American Civil War he laboured to keep hostilities from spreading north to British territory. An early proponent of the desireability of union of the British North American provinces, Monck devoted his energies and the prestige of his office to the cause of Confederation. His appointment was extended to allow him to become the first Governor General of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. He retired to his estates in Ireland the following year.

De noblesse irlandaise, ancien membre du gouvernement britannique, Lord Monck fut nomme Gouverneur général de l'Amérique britannique en 1861. Pendant la guerre de Sécession américaine, il veilla à ce que les hostilités ne débordent pas sur le territoire britannique. Convaincu dès lors qu'il aurait avantage à unir les provinces britanniques de l'Amérique du Nord, is consacra son énergie et le prestige de sa fonction à pomouvoir la cause de la Confédération. Son mandat ayant été prolongé à cette fin, il devint le premier Gouverneur général du Canada en 1867. L'année suivane, il se retira en Irlande.

Confederation Boulevard Plaque

The plaque commemoration Confederation Boulevard occupies a place on the north side of Princess Avenue east of the roundabout that joins Sussex Drive, Rideau Gate and Princess Avenue.


CONFEDERATION BOULEVARD

Since the late 19th century, the Governor General of Canada and foreign dignitaries on state visits have used the ceremonial route that begins at Rideau Hall (behind you) to travel to Parliament Hill. Today known as Confederation Boulevard, this route also serves as Canada's Discovery Route. It symbolically links the downtown cores of Ottawa and Gatineau, forming the heart of the Capital Region.

This plaque was installed by the National Capital Commission.


LE BOULEVARD DE LA CONFEDERATION

Depuis la fin du 19e siècle, le gouverneur général du Canada ainsi que les dignitaires étrangers en visite d'État utilisent une route protocolaire qui débute à l'entrée de Rideau Hall(derrière vous) pour atteindre la colline du parlement. Aujourd'hui appelé le boulevard de la Conféderation, ce parcours d'honneur sert également de voie de la découverte du Canada. Il relie symboliquement les centres villes d'Ottawa et de Gatineau por former le cœur de la capitale.

Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine Tree

In Commissioner's Park east of Queen Elizabeth Drive and West of Dow's Lake Road north of Madawaska Drive stands a tree commemorating a thousand years of Christianity in Ukraine.




This tree was planted to commemorate A Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine. Planted by Graeme Kirby, Executive Vice-President & General Manager, National Capital Commission, James A. Durrell, Mayor, City of Ottawa, Dr. Dmytro Cipywnyk, Ukranian Canadian Congress, Dr. Petro Savaryn, World Congress of Free Ukranians, On the occasion of the National Millennium Celebrations, October 8, 1988.


Cet arbre a été planté pour commémorer le millénaire du christiansime en Ukriane. Planté par: Graeme Kirby, Vice-président exécutif et Directeur générale de la Commission de la capitale nationale, James A. Durrell, maire de la ville d'Ottawa, Dr. Dmytro Cipywnyk, Congrès mondial des Ukraniens libres à l'occasion de la commèmoration du millènaire national, le 8 octobre 1988.

Fiftieth Anniversary of Canadian Governors General Plaque

In the grounds of Rideau Hall, west of Rideau Hall and its fountain on the north side of the path a garden with a plaque commemorates fifty years of Canadians occupying the position of Canada's Governor General.

Unveiled by her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of her Majesty's Golden Jubilee visit to Canada.
